The British love a day out at a County Show – it’s in our nature to enjoy pottering around surrounded by the countryside, marvelling at the very best in local agriculture, animals, food, drink and hand-made crafts. Unfortunately, the English weather can rarely be trusted and has been known to go from 30-degree sunshine to downpours in a matter of hours.

Most of the New Forest Show is held outside, so unless you’re planning on spending the whole day in one of our many beer tents (we wouldn’t blame you) you’re likely to be subjected to the whims of the English weather.

At the Show we think it’s always better to plan ahead and be prepared for whatever the weather might throw at us, so we’ve created your ultimate guide of what to wear and bring (and what not to bring) to the New Forest & Hampshire County Show in 2026.

How to Dress for Sunshine and Showers at the New Forest Show

Our biggest piece of advice when choosing an outfit for your day out to the Show is check the weather on the day/s you are planning to visit! Weather forecasts aren’t always accurate but it’s better be get a general vibe of what you can expect rather than completely winging it.

A good technique if you are unsure of the weather or are planning on arriving early, is to layer your clothing – if you’re arriving at 7am it will be considerably chillier than at 2pm after a morning of July sunshine. Pop some leggings on under your sundress and bring a jumper to throw on if the weather takes a turn for the worse. We would also highly advise bringing a waterproof jacket – being soaked through and shivering will not make for a pleasant day out!

On the flip side we have experienced highs of 36 degrees over the last couple of months, so bringing (and wearing) sun cream is non-negotiable. The last thing you want to experience on a fun day out is sun burn.

We would also recommend bringing sunglasses, so you don’t have to squint for hours on end to see the fantastic events we’ve got lined up for you to enjoy. Plus, a hat to look chic – but more importantly to fight off those pesky UV rays.

If the forecast is hot and sunny consider wearing light, breathable fabrics like linen or cotton, it’s also a great idea to keep things flowy – allow your skin to breathe by keeping things nice and airy.

Ultimately, remember; practicality over fashion every time for this spectacular 3-day event!

Why Comfortable Shoes Are Essential at the show

The reality of a county show the size and scale of the New Forest Show is that you will probably walk several miles during your visit. Your smart watch will be buzzing every 2 minutes, and you’ll reach that 10,000 step goal before you settle down for your first bite of lunch.

The terrain can be uneven and unpredictable considering this, tried and tested, comfortable shoes are the way to go during your visit. Trainers, or something similar that you don’t mind getting dusty, that you’ve already broken in and that you know you can comfortably walk around in for several hours are your best friends at the Show.

If heavy rain is forecast maybe pop some good old fashioned British wellies in the car to ensure that you can have fun no matter the weather.
