Our Mini Forest at New Park
This January (2026), our Education Team braved the wind and rain alongside volunteers from the Two Trees Conservation Group to carry out weeding as part of our ongoing Mini Forest Project at New Park.

How the Mini Forest Began
The Mini Forest was first established in 2024 with the help of local schoolchildren, who joined us on site to plant hundreds of saplings. As part of the project, the children also took part in hands-on educational activities led by New Forest Rangers, learning about woodland habitats, biodiversity, and the importance of caring for the natural environment.
It was an inspiring way to bring conservation to life and to help young people build a meaningful connection with the Forest.
Supporting the Trees to Thrive
Now entering its second year, the focus of the project has shifted from planting to care and maintenance. Weeding plays a vital role in helping saplings establish properly, reducing competition for water and nutrients while allowing roots to develop.
Once the weeding is complete, a layer of mulch will be added around the trees. This helps retain soil moisture and will suppress further weed growth, giving the Mini Forest the best possible chance to grow strong and healthy.

A Legacy for Wildlife and Education
Over time, the Mini Forest will continue to develop into a thriving space for wildlife, providing food and shelter for birds, insects, and other species, while also serving as a valuable outdoor learning environment for future educational activities.
As a charity, the New Forest Show helps fund projects like this through ticket sales. Support from our visitors enables us to invest in education, conservation, and community initiatives across the Forest throughout the year.
We’re incredibly grateful to everyone involved in helping this project grow, from schoolchildren and volunteers to our dedicated Education Team.
