Dogs are always welcome at the New Forest Show – and they get in completely free! But with 85,000 visitors over three days and a full-on Showground to navigate, it’s worth thinking about whether it’s the right day out for your particular pup before you set off.

You know your dog best. Some absolutely thrive at a busy event – loving the smells, the people and all the excitement. Others, especially older dogs, anxious dogs, or those who struggle in the heat, are better off enjoying a quiet day at home. There’s no shame in that – it’s just knowing your dog.

Hot-weather advice for dog owners

The Showground is large, exposed and can get very warm. On hot days especially, please think carefully before bringing your dog along.

Water points and shaded areas are available across the site, but these can get busy – so please don’t rely on them alone when making your decision.

If it’s a warm day, here are a few things worth keeping in mind:

• Check the forecast and any Show updates before you travel
• Arrive earlier in the day to avoid the hottest part of the afternoon
• Bring a portable water bowl and offer your dog a drink regularly
• Keep an eye on how warm the ground is – if it’s uncomfortable to touch, it’s too hot for their paws
• Take regular breaks in quieter spots away from the crowds
• Watch for signs that your dog is struggling – heavy panting, slowing down, or seeming unsettled are all cues to take a break or head home
• Never leave your dog in a vehicle, even for a short time

If your dog seems uncomfortable at any point, please don’t wait it out – head home. You can always come back another day.

Please also be aware that the Show may update its guidance on the day based on the weather. If you spot a dog that looks like it’s struggling, please let one of our stewards know and they’ll arrange help straight away.

Official Dog Rules at the New Forest Show 2026 

If you’re bringing your dog, please bear in mind:

• Dogs must be kept on a short lead at all times. The Showground is busy and extendable leads can be a trip hazard for other visitors
• Dogs are not allowed in any livestock areas. These will be clearly signed. Please respect this – it’s for everyone’s safety, including your dog’s
• Banned breeds are not permitted on the Showground

The Show reserves the right to refuse entry to, or ask for the removal of, any dog where safety or welfare concerns arise.

Should you bring your Dog to the Show? 

Every dog is different. Some will love every second of a Show day – the smells alone are practically a theme park. Others may find the noise, the crowds and the long stretches on their feet a bit much.

If your dog is nervous, reactive, very young, elderly or particularly sensitive to heat, this might not be the best environment for them. Put their day first – and if in doubt, leave them at home with a chew and a comfortable spot in the shade.

Can my dog join in on the fun? 

If your dog is the sociable, up-for-anything type, they’re going to have an excellent time.

Top Tips for visiting the New Forest Show with a Dog 

• Bring a portable bowl – free water stations are dotted across the Showground
• Pack waste bags and please clean up after your dog
• Short leads only – long or extendable leads aren’t safe in a busy crowd
• Arrive early and take the quieter parts of the day where you can
• Take regular breaks out of the sun – your dog will thank you for it
• Watch for signs they’re struggling and head home if needed
• Don’t leave your dog in the car, even briefly
• Puppies who haven’t completed their vaccinations should stay at home
